In our continuing series, “The Outpouring”, we turn our attention to Paul's discussion to the Romans regarding living a spiritual life. The thought of being set free from the law of sin and death is the crux of his message. The fulfillment of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is realized for those who set their minds not on the things of the flesh, but on the things of the Spirit. We revealed the functions of the Holy Spirit as those things that pertain specifically to what the Holy Spirit does for us -- convicts us of sin, is our great Helper and Advocate, as well as a judge who condemns sin and the devil. Now we can turn to a spiritual wisdom, where the deep things of the Spirit are revealed to us as heirs to the Kingdom, children of God. Living the Spirit-filled life deepens an awareness of God continuously, regardless of circumstances, disappointment and despair. Difficult yes, but nonetheless the road that leads to a joyful future.
Do you live a deeper spiritual life or do you still struggle with the carnal nature on a regular basis? Has an actual infilling of the Holy Spirit occurred in your life that brings boldness and certainty about living a more spiritual life, or are you one of the many who still question God's empowering presence as irrelevant in your life? Paul tells us that to be carnally minded is death, but to the spiritually minded is life and peace. May we all be filled to overflowing with God's Holy Spirit as he empowers us to live Spirit-filled lives!
